we are travelling from san fran through yosemite, mammoth, vegas, bryce, grand canyon south down to LA. Does anyone know if it is possible to see the san andreas fault en route. thanks
san andreas fault
Faults are to be found at the edges of tectonic plates - very deep underground. If you make a day trip out to West Marin (Muir Woods, beaches, etc), be sure to visit the Point Reyes National Seashore, where you can follow the Earthquake Trail. There you will walk along the path of the San Andreas and see a fence that was shifted 18ft during the 1906 earthquake.
san andreas faultIt can also be seen at Carrizo Plain in San Luis Obispo County %26amp; Kern County. It can be found between highway 101 and I-5, 166 and 28 (according to Google Maps) so depending on what route you plan you might be able to make time to see it.

San Andreas fault is pretty huge and long. Seeing the fence shifted 18 ft at Pt Reyes is little stuff. But it becomes more noticeable the farther you get away--like from an airplane. Notice the mountain ridges, lakes (eg Crystal Springs), etc. Pinnacles National Monument is an exploded volcano along the fault. The other half of the volcano is shifted a couple hundred miles to the south. I-5 goes along the fault for a little while in the south central valley.
