4th of July

What is there to do for the 4th in Santa Cruz?

4th of July

What are you looking for - day or night activities?

Of course you can go to the Boardwalk, and the beach during the day. You can also research Wilder Ranch State Park about 4 miles n/o Santa Cruz, there%26#39;s often an old fashioned 4th event going on. There%26#39;s a parade in Aptos, sorry locals, I find it very boring, but you may not. You can visit Roaring Camp Railroad or take a hike through Nisene Marks Park.

In the late afternoon the coastal roads will be shut down. Although it is illegal, everyone flocks to the beaches to light off their own fireworks. It feels like a war zone sometimes. The roads are closed to allow emergency vehicles quick access if necessary. Although Santa Cruz never puts on fireworks, this year the two places that normally had displays; the City of Scotts Valley and Watsonville Ocean Speedway have canceled due to high fire danger. But car racing will still go on in Watsonville.

You can always log on the local newspaper, www.santacruzsentinel.com for more info.

4th of July

Santa Cruz does not do formal fireworks on the 4th. Instead people do their own fireworks on the beaches. This year security is tighter with all the california wildfires and I expect there will be fewer fireworks in Santa Cruz. Wilder Ranch State Park always does an old fashioned 4th with special events that approximate a 4th of July celebration from the 1880%26#39;s. This is particularly good for families and history buffs. Lots of folks do a bonfire and BBQ on the beach. Basically, people do the things they normally do on a summer weekend in town.

This year I would not expect a ';wink-wink'; on illegal fireworks. With all of the fires I would expect a VERY stiff fine. This includes sparklers.

Otherwise, come ahead and do all of the activities mentioned above.

Thank you for the information I think we will go to Wilder Ranch. How%26#39;s the weather?

The weather has been overcast the past few days in the morning and then becomes sunny around noon. This morning is gorgeous. I am sitting here watching a fabulous sunrise.
