this hotel has gotten great reviews on all hotel sites...just wondering about the location though...a few people commented not to walk around at night and that it is on the edge of the not so safe area..I really want to stay there and found a great deal on cheaphotels.com but just want to make sure it is not in a bad section...and I guess it is not in union square is it? everyone says that is the best place to stay..
thanks for any advise!
intercontinental hotel...location ok?
The hotel is on the corner of 5th and Howard.
If you use 5th Street to walk to and from Market Street and Union Square I cannot see that you will have a problem.
The area you would avoid is from 6th Street onwards but there is nothing there that you would want to see anyway.
Late at night if returning alone to the hotel you might consider a cab. I don%26#39;t think of 5th as dangerous but late at night you might feel uncomfortable.
I%26#39;m sure you will enjoy your stay____have a great trip.
intercontinental hotel...location ok?
To add a little more to previous answer____Yes, Union Square is the best place to stay.
The Intercontinental is not located in a bad part of town but really it is catering to the convention crowd at the Moscone Convention Centre right next door.
The walk back to Market and Union Square would be around 10 minutes .
They are offering good opening deals and the hotels services and amenities seem to be good so why not take advantage of it.
Have fun.
I stayed here very recently. I had absolutely no issues with safety at anytime during the day or even late at night. It is a short walk up 5th Street to Market Street. I only ever passed one docile homeless person sitting on the pavement on this 5 minute walk and the street was never totally deserted of other pedestrians.
I actually found the location of the hotel very convenient and while many people seem to like to be in Union Square - I actually prefered being here, although the corner of Howard and 5th can be windy!
It is a very pleasant hotel - I was in a club room and the bathroom was excellent with great Floris toiletries. Comfortable beds, Frette linens and excellent housekeeping.
The staff at the concierge were particularly friendly and helpful, the rest were so-so!
The only downside as a single visitor is that you may feel rather swamped by conference delegates if the hotel happens to be busy at the time of your visit. That%26#39;s where having use of the Club Lounge is an advantage.
Given you have a good rate I would have no hesitation staying here - I am sure you will enjoy it.
thanks for the advise!!!I will be with my 18 year old daughter...we are taking the trip for her graduation gift!!!!
Question...do the cable cars come by the intercontinental or somewhere near? if near how many blocks/minutes to get there...?
thanks again!!
Regarding cable cars, you have to head up 5th, cross Market, head east one block, but don%26#39;t wait in line at Powell %26amp; Market, walk up to Post %26amp; Powell and catch it there. Have $5 per person for a ride if you don%26#39;t use the SF MUNI visitor passport. http://www.sfmta.com/cms/mfares/passports.htm Enjoy your stay!
In addition to the cable cars, remember also the F line which runs from Castro all along Market Street and around to Fishermans Wharf. A ride on one of the historic and beautifully restored and maintained street cars is also a great experience. There is a stop at 5th and Market - so convenient for the InterContinental.
but is the cable car stop close to the intercontinental? and is it $5 a day or a ride.? Just wondering if we need day passes each day if we might actually be walking around...I hear the city pass includes day passes for so many days and it would add up to about what I would pay for the 4 full days I will be there...I read somehwere it is like $11 a day ? so I figured to just buy the city pass and that would be $44 and the city pass is like $54 and it includes some museums and the aquarium which I am sure we will visit as we love aquariums!!!
you guys are really helpful!
$5 per ride, if you go to just one museum, it might be worth your while. Just passed the hotel about an hour ago, many people in front in and out with the convention center going on a block away.
You dont need to buy an $11 Muni passport for each day! There is one for 3 (consecutive)days at $18 and one for 7 (consecutive)days at $24.
It is about a 10 minute (flat) walk from the hotel to the Cable Car stop.
It just depends on what you plan on doing with your time. If you are staying for four days and plan on using public transit to most places (including the cable cars, which are part of Muni transit), I%26#39;d buy a 3-day PassPort (this is a tourist%26#39;s Muni pass) for whichever of the three days is your fullest.
Remember that cable cars are $5 for each segment, that is to say, if you ride one and get off, that%26#39;s $5. The next time you get back on one, it%26#39;s another $5, even if you just got off for a few minutes to take a picture at the top of Nob Hill, and wanted to get on the next one headed to FW or Union Square. For that reason, a $11 Muni PassPort even for a day in which you plan to take the cable car just up and back on one line -- or switch to another at Powell and California -- is worth it, since chances are you might get off and want to get on a third time, or take a Muni bus or streetcar elsewhere.
They give you the most flexibility, but you really do have to know if you are going to taking at least three transit trips that day, two being on the cable car...
Hope that helps.
