Alcatraz

Is Alcatraz prison open to the public. Someone told me that it wasn%26#39;t any longer.

Alcatraz

Nonsense !

You must book in advance and only with alcatrazcruises.com

I%26#39;m sure you will enjoy it.

Alcatraz

Yes, www.alcatrazcruises.com has all the info, do reserve in advance.

I have a question about amount of walking on the tour. I%26#39;m told if you take the night tour, you get taken up the hill to the prison by tram as part of the guided tour. Is that true? If so, how much walking is there after you get up to the prison? One family member has a condition that limits walking. Thanks!

Here is info on the tram for people who have difficulty walking or use wheelchairs. I think it runs all day, not just at night.

As for Alcatraz being closed to the public--it%26#39;s closed only to any new inmates. These days, folks who do things that would qualify them for Alcatraz go to ';supermax'; prisons like one in Colorado where terrorists are sent, or regular maximum security prisons in various places.

It%26#39;s pretty much a self-guided tour - though you have the option of listening to a ranger give a talk at points along the way. But by no means would someone with mobility issues feel they have to ';keep up'; with the entire group.

The tram runs regularly.........will take anyone with mobility issues.

tptr

I have a question also about that tram...My daughter has a condition with her legs and hips and would no way be able to walk up the hill....Do they just take people in wheelchairs and maybe elderly people? I am not elderly but would probably not make it up the hill myself ...How do they determine if you can ride the tram or not..? Just asking so I don%26#39;t go all the way there and not even be able to see it..]

thanks!

The tram is for anyone with limited mobility and is first-come-first-served. Wheelchairs can be transported, but you need to bring your own; none are available on the island.

The tram runs at about half-hour intervals in both directions. The tram from the dock is coordinated with arriving ferries. If you wish, you can take the tram that meets your boat or you can hang around the dock area where there is an orientation and exhibits, and catch the next tram up.

If you need more info, call the Alcatraz ranger station at 415-561-4900
