An evening in Salinas?

We (parents and 16yo) will be doing the Steinbeck Center in the afternoon and will be looking for a good place for dinner on a weeknight. I would prefer something that is not part of a big chain and not too greasy-- in fact, a place that utilizes local produce would be fantastic. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Also, is there anything (shops, restaurants) in Old Town open in the evening? Thanks for your help!

I wouldn%26#39;t want to be out in Salinas at night. Instead, take Hwy 68 toward Monterey and dine at Tarpy%26#39;s Roadhouse.

Where are you staying that night? I agree with Kibblesmom. If at all possible, head toward Monterey. Tarpy%26#39;s is a great suggestion. It will take you about 25 minutes from the Steinbeck Center.

Thanks for your quick responses! Is it unsafe even before dark? We will have been doing quite a bit of driving that week, and we%26#39;ve been out to Monterey many times before...maybe just pick up sandwiches somewhere and go back to the hotel to enjoy by the pool?

In that case, consider Hullaballoo in Old Town: http://www.hullaballoorestaurant.com/

The Salinas government is trying to make things better, but it still can be a dangerous place if you%26#39;re in the wrong place at the wrong time. There is not a lot of random violence--mostly gang activity that is pretty focused--but it%26#39;s not somewhere I%26#39;d choose for a vacation. Old Town for dinner should be fine.

Looks PERFECT! Thanks for the rapid responses.
