Which restaurant in Fresno ?

In early August we are travelling from Sequioa NP to Yosemite with a one night stop-over at the Four Points by Sheraton, Fresno . Can anyone suggest a good restaurant near by ? The idea is to get a bit of retail therapy between National Parks .... Any decent malls near this hotel ?

Which restaurant in Fresno ?

There is a mall across Blackstone from the property, it provides a mix of services including 2 department stores. It would be OK to pick up any specific needs but if you are looking for an extended shopping excursion I would suggest Fig Garden Village or Fashion Fair, both about 3 and a half miles away on Shaw Avenue. Also the RiverPark area about 5 miles north on Blackstone.

Any particular type/style/price range of food you are looking for? The area around the hotel will be mainly fast food or casual chain dining. But there are some very nice non-chain experiences in Fresno depending upon your tastes.

Which restaurant in Fresno ?

There is a nice article in the NYTimes about Fresno. May 3rd if you can get it online.

Seems there is a lot of good antiquing there..

If that is part of your retail therapy :)

It had an interesting section about Clovis..They said:

Fill your trunk with porcelain dogs from China and cracked-glaze ceramic cheese keepers in the nearby city of Clovis. Though engulfed by the sprawl of greater Fresno (population 1 million), the area around Pollasky and Fifth Streets in Clovis still looks like a frontier burg, albeit one filled with antiques shops.

Emporium (460 Clovis Avenue, 559-322-6105), a former dry goods store built in 1904.

Before hitting the road, enjoy afternoon tea ($9 to $28 a person) at the Victoria Rose Cottage (356 Pollasky Avenue, 559-322-4832), where the waitresses serve scones and egg-salad sandwiches while dressed in Victorian-era garb. Someone has to.

NYTimes Travel Section.

I think the idea of afternoon tea most days, so if this is close to your hotel, you might like it too. :)

Thanks Fresno %26amp; Scarlett for your info .

We are looking for a restaurant close by that you wouldn%26#39;t find in 100 other cities .... any thoughts ?

Scarlett ..... afternoon tea , how civilised . I thought you got rid of that idea in Boston over 200 years ago !!!

The Clovis area would be northeast of the hotel about 7 or 8 miles. I haven%26#39;t had a chance to do tea since the Victoria Rose reopened. A few of us Yanks are civilized, my grandfather was born in England, raised in Canada then emigrated to the States. So I may one of the Fresno area residents who have been brought up right. ;)

For dinner, a few suggestions but they do require driving since they are a few miles from the hotel. There are also lots of hole in the wall places with good ethnic food in so-so locations but I%26#39;ll keep you to some of the nicer areas for this trip.

Fig Garden Village Shopping Center would provide one of the nicer places for retail therapy. It also would have a couple of the best places in town for dinner.

One of the best in town would be The Chef%26#39;s Table in Fig Garden, although it will be a little pricey. The Chef was raised in Fresno, ran the restaurant at the W Hotel in San Francisco where he was named one of SF%26#39;s rising culinary stars. Then he decided to return home to Fresno. The restaurant has been written up in several magazines. There is a regular menu with patio seating plus the Chef%26#39;s Table dining area with a five course, prix fixe menu that changes weekly.

Also at Fig Garden is The Ripe Tomato Restaurant. Continental cuisine and a dining fixture for probably 30 years.

You could also try Citron, located on Blackstone at Shaw Avenue about 2 miles from the hotel. Its a continental bistro owned by Rimon Hanna, an expat who used to be Head Chef at the restaurant at Harvey Nichols in London.

If I think of others I will post them for you.

Aloha!

It depends on what kind of food you like. If you like chinese then the Shanghai is just a few blocks norht of your hotel. It is very popular and serves great food. It is located in a small shopping center on the northwest corner of Blackstone and Griffith. We live and eat out here all the time so give us an idea of what you like ane willl try to help you. We have a wide diversion of ethic goups that live in our city so there many choices of foods available.

Thanks for all the suggestions . All the family like Chinese food so perhaps we will try The Shanghai .

How about a ggod place for breakfast as we will need to fill up with carbs before heading to Yosemite for 3 days hiking ?

For a great breakfast in a casual bistro-setting the Bagel Basket is excellent on Herndon %26amp; Blackstone. The best bagels in town. I%26#39;ll second Citron, it is very good.

We had an excellent Mother%26#39;s Day Brunch at FIVE @ Champlain %26amp; Perrin. We have been here for dinner also, it%26#39;s one of the nicest places in the area right now, especially with the closing of ECHO a few weeks ago. :)

For retail therapy I highly suggest Fashion Fair or Fig Garden Village. You can see what stores you would find at either location by using these links: www.fashionfairmall.com or www.shopfiggardenvillage.com

Upscale chain stores can be found at both centers while what Fig Garden may lack in the department store category it makes up for with small locally-owned boutiques and fantastic restaurants.

You might also consider River Park where you will find the best movieplex in town and many restaurants and stores of the chain variety. Nothing truly upscale here.

There%26#39;s a place around there called Yosemite%26#39;s something.....and it is VERY good. My best friend lives in Fresno and when I visited from San Francisco we went there and had a fabulous STAEK and ALL the FIXIN%26#39;S kind of meal. Good drinks and very rustic. I really liked it and would return!!!

If you%26#39;re into Mexican food, my personal fave is El Toro on Cedar and Shields. Don%26#39;t judge the food by the shopping center the restaurant%26#39;s in. We%26#39;ve (as a family) been going there for something like 30 years. Honestly I%26#39;m craving some right now. Family owned, authentic Mexican food. Totaly worth it!
