LA or SF airport?

Hi there

We%26#39;re looking to visit California next year. Will set aside about 5/6 weeks next September to wander around, but don%26#39;t want to spend all of our time on the road. Probably easiest to run from La to San Francisco or reverse and take in coast, Yosemite, desert, wine country and will visit San Diego for family reasons.

We%26#39;re familiar with US and know that entry is usually slow but there%26#39;s slow and then there%26#39;s Miami!!! Is it quicker in San Francisco or LA? Where would you start?

I%26#39;ll be back for other stuff later!

LA or SF airport?

I would do a one way car rental Los Angeles to San Francisco if you are doing the coastal route (for some reason most people do the reverse).

LA or SF airport?

Most people drive the coast route north to south so they can be on the ';ocean'; side of the road. Easier to view and to pull off dfor a stop.

There was an excellent trip report here by people who flew into LA from the UK and has a horrible time with customs/arrivals. They felt it was a problem with the airport, not just bad luck. They otherwise loved the US and had a great time, but said they would NEVER fly into LA again. The report was by LeicesterGolfer---look for it and read the report of Day 1.

They did not have any problems on departure from LA.

So I would suggest you fly into SFO and out of LA. That way you will be visiting the north coast and Yosemite earlier in September, and save the south for later, which makes sense weather-wise as well.

With 5-6 weeks you could look at doing a round trip, San Francisco down to San Diego, then back up through Death Valley %26amp; Yosemite to SF.

The advantage of driving north is that you have the sun behind you. The road is only a two lane highway, so you can still get excellent ocean views. I agree it is easier to use the ocean side turnouts when driving south.
