We will be traveling to west coast in August and spending three nights in Carmel, four in SFO. Our son, 21, college student and daughter, 23, college grad and working full-time in the real world, will be traveling with us. I love Carmel and the quaint community, galleries, etc., but am concerned the kids wont have much to do in the evening. Is their nightlife, pubs, music in the area? I have heard somewhere that the noise ordinance has changed and there is one bar with occasional jazz music%26gt;????? Dont quite know the details, but would like to know if they will be totally bored. We will be touring during the day, and i will be beat by the end of the day, but these young ones will keep on going.
Thanks to all.
Nightlife in Carmel for 21 and 23 year old-nonexistent??Hi. They son and daughter should head to Monterey in the evening. On Cannery Row, Sly McFly%26#39;s (sfstation.com/live-music-at-sly-mcflys-refue鈥?/a>)
has live music and is a popular place for young people. Downtown Monterey has a martini bar called Lallapalooza, (鈥ol.com/monterey/鈥-116316241) as well as some pubs, and the Mucky Duck, which has a D.J. (http://www.muckyduckmonterey.com/index.html)
Carmel does close down early, but they%26#39;ll find activity in Monterey.
Nightlife in Carmel for 21 and 23 year old-nonexistent??Thank you, PG! I remember visiting Monterey Cannery Row, John Steinbeck%26#39;s house, etc. Approximatley, how far is it from Carmel? Is there taxi service between the two towns? Thanks!
Hi. Driving time from Carmel to Cannery Row is about 12 to 18 minutes, depending on the time of day. You can call for a cab (Yellow cab:(831) 375-5155; Central Coast Cab. Co. (831) 646-8294). There is also bus service (www.mst.org), but it%26#39;s much more complicated. When I answered about nightlife, I didn%26#39;t realize that you won%26#39;t have a car. Still, a cab from Carmel to Monterey is not expensive--probably less than $10. You just have to call to order a cab since they don%26#39;t just drive by or hang around waiting for fares, even in downtown Monterey.
We will have a car, but if they go to a pub and have a couple of drinks, we would prefer they take a taxi back to Carmel. They do this in our town and it is just not worth taking a chance - drinking and driving. So there really isnt anything in Carmel they could walk to???? I think Monterey will be the direction they will be heading. WHo knows, maybe they will be dead tired at the end of the day and want to spend the evening with their parents!! hahaha Very much appreciate the phone numbes of the taxis. Thank you.
I have a 23-year-old daughter, and I agree with you about the driving. There is Jack London%26#39;s Bar and Grill (http://www.jacklondons.com/) in downtown Carmel. I think the younger people end up in Monterey, though.
Could you drop them in the area PGDenizen suggested and they could call a cab from whatever club or bar when they are ready to come back?
That is exactly what we will do - drop them off in the evening (on the east coast, their evenings dont begin until 11ish!!!) Probably the same everywhere. They will take a taxi home unless we are up. am a bit leary (yes, i am a mom)unleashing them in a new town, but the fact they have each other is a comfort. I am sure Carmel and Monterey are safe if they stay on the beaten track. My daughter survived four years of college in a sketchy area/city on the east coast and is living on her own now, but i dont think i will ever stop worrying!! :)
This is a very safe place, but I won%26#39;t tell you not to worry because it%26#39;s physically impossible for a mother.
Mom, I think once you see the area, you%26#39;ll feel far more at ease.
Have a wonderful time in Carmel/Monterey. I have to wait two more weeks...
