Any nice coves to snorkel or swim around the la jolla area for kids?
Snorkling for kids?
Only La Jolla cove, but that still depends on their age and tolerance for really cold water and some strong surge at times... And the vis is often less than 10 feet, which isn%26#39;t much fun from the surface.
Snorkling for kids?
How old, how strong of swimmers are they? My 8 year old is a competitive swimmer and I%26#39;m not comfortable letting her beyond her depth at any SoCal beaches/coves. If you are used to more calm, tropical conditions our coast is not like that.
La Jolla Shores has an area where the (harmless) leopard sharks congregate during the late spring/summer months. They usually are very close to the beach, and easily reached by kids that are good swimmers.
La Jolla Cove is fairly suitable for snorkeling, but the better snorkeling is a little outside of the cove in the kelp forest.
As previous posts indicated, the water is very cold (right now around 63 degrees F.), and even in summer (69-71 degrees F.) many snorkelers wear wet suits.
Consider renting some kayaks with the kids to explore the La Jolla Cove.
