san francisoc to carmel please help

You may want to schedule some time for Pt. Lobos State Park, the California Market @ the Highland%26#39;s Inn would be a great place for lunch, they have gorgeous views from their outdoor patio of Yankee Point, even binoculars on the table! :)

If you want a nice lunch in the downtown Carmel area, we loved our meal at Grasing%26#39;s last month, I have a review posted on this site of our time there. Have a great trip! :)

For the best views, take Hwy 1 all the way. Allowing for stops to look at the scenery, etc., you%26#39;ll need somewhere between 3 and 4 hours. One little tricky area: when you get to Santa Cruz, there is a section of Hwy 1 that takes you through some city streets (Mission St.). Just continue to follow the sign for Hwy 1 South toward Watsonville and Monterey.

Depending on when you leave SF, you can stop for lunch along the way or have lunch in Carmel. You%26#39;ll pass through Moss Landing about halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey. There%26#39;s a place to eat there that is a local institution and a lot of fun: Phil%26#39;s Fish Market (http://www.philsfishmarket.com/eatery.html). Otherwise, in Carmel, you can go to Liitle Napoli (excellent Italian), Club Jalapeno (Mexican), Katy%26#39;s Place, and I love Grasing%26#39;s but you might find it too upscale for your two-year-old--most restaurants here are kid-friendly, though, because they have to cater to visiting families. The food at Grasing%26#39;s is outstanding. Another option is to go to the Fifth Ave. Deli in Carmel and get sandwiches and salads and picnic on Carmel Beach, which is gorgeous.

It%26#39;s fun to just walk around Carmel and browse in the shops and galleries. Since you%26#39;ll be here for only a few hours, I would just enjoy Carmel and not try to do too much else. If you%26#39;d like a coffee/tea/pastry treat before you leave Carmel, try Patisserie Boissiere, which is on Mission St. by Carmel Plaza. If it%26#39;s a cool, foggy day, you can sit by the fire and relax a bit.

The best route for heading back is to take 1 North to 156 to 101 N. You can then take 101 all the way to SF, or in San Jose, you can pick up 280 N into SF. 280 is quite a pretty drive, so I recommend it. If you%26#39;re going to be here on a Sunday, you can expect a lot of traffic leaving the Monterey Peninsula heading north. So, if you have a choice, try to come another day of the week.

Have a safe trip.

is there a way that we could just take part of the coast drive, being with our bay will be too long 3-4 hours just one way.

To keep it a shorter drive, you can take 280 S to 85 S to 101 S to 156 WEST to 1 South. That will put you in Carmel in about 2 to 2.5 hours. Then you can do what Syrahgirl suggested, and go about 5 miles south of Carmel on Hwy 1 to Point Lobos State Reserve. There are easy trails (do you have a backpack carrier for your baby?) with spectacular coastline views. You also could take the drive along the 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach (it costs about $9 to get in--if you eat there (at the Lodge or at Spanish Bay), they reimburse your gate fee). We used to take that drive when our daughter was little, and she%26#39;d conk out in her car seat while we enjoyed the views.

the 17 miles, is a route that I could take after I reach carmel or it is beofre I arrive to Carmel?

Is Pto lobos worth the trip

Point Lobos is approximately 5 miles beyond Carmel, so we%26#39;re talking about an extra few minutes. And yes, if you love the outdoors and beautiful views, it%26#39;s well worth it.

Take a look at this map: www.insiders.com/monterey/map-oview.htm

You%26#39;ll see that the towns of Monterey, Carmel, Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove actually touch one another. This is a very compact area. To get to 17-Mile Drive, as you head down Hwy 1 toward Carmel, you%26#39;ll take the Pacific Grove/Pebble Beach/68 West exit, get in the left lane on the off-ramp, go straight through the light and then take your first right into Pebble Beach.

If you want to go to Carmel first, instead of getting off at that exit, go to Ocean Avenue and turn right at the light. This will take you straight into downtown Carmel.

It would be a good idea to get out your road atlas and familiarize yourself with the area.
