Trying to find the magical place

Back in the mid 90%26#39;s we enjoyed a vacation in south Lake Tahoe -- one day we decided to drive to Donner Pass.

On the way back we decided to take another route and, in the middle of nowhere (it seemed) we found ourselves in the most magical little town.

It was right, smack next to a river. There were giant boulders everywhere and there were houses perched above the raging water. There was an inn with a restaurant, which was closed at the time, possibly because it was late winter or early spring. I seem to remember that there wasn%26#39;t much else in the town, just the inn and the houses.

I%26#39;ve tried and tried to find this place on a map, as I%26#39;d love to return. It made a huge impression on me and I%26#39;ve never been able to forget it. Does anyone have any clues as to where this might be?

Trying to find the magical place

Donner Pass Rd. becomes Old Highway 40 as it goes over the summit. It sound like you are talking about Rainbow Lodge. It%26#39;s exactly as you have described. It%26#39;s a wonderful place to have brunch in the summer. You can sit outside and watch the river. During the winter, we like to have a drink in the cozy bar. It%26#39;s got old Tahoe charm. The Inn has quaint rooms with antiques.

Trying to find the magical place

Wow -- I think you%26#39;re right -- that%26#39;s amazing, I never thought I%26#39;d be able to find it again!

Our camera was out of film (yes, it was the old days!) and I was so upset that I couldn%26#39;t take pictures. Now that I%26#39;ve found it, I%26#39;ll definitely go back.

Thanks very much -- I really appreciate it!!!

You%26#39;re welcome, Sarah! Rainbow Lodge is about 20 minutes from my house. I should go there more often, love the place.

MMMMMmmmmmm I love Rainbow Lodge. Took mom there for her B-day dinner and we all had a wonderful meal. They were very accomodating to our finicky kids too. Made them sorta modified meals. Waiting for everyone to show up we sat outside and enjoyed the scenery.

How far is the drive to Donner Pass from SLT?

From Donner Pass to SLT is about 50 miles using I-80 to CA-89 hwy south to SLT. Driving time takes about 1-2hrs.

The driving time from SLT to Donner Pass Rd. is just under an hour. Unless, of course, you want to try the drive this week. I would allow three hours during the holiday period.

Just to clarify, if you are on Donner Pass Rd. you don%26#39;t need to get on 80. Take Donner Pass to 89 south.
