Hi all!
We are a family of four and will be traveling to Los Angeles in a few weeks. We%26#39;d love to have a couple of hotel suggestions. We won%26#39;t be spending all our time in the hotel, but we%26#39;d like to have a nice place to come back to each night. We%26#39;ll have a car but would like to be in downtown LA or another close, urban area. Thanks for any suggestions.
Hotel Suggestion
Downtown L.A. while changing, is still mostly a business dristrict. You might want to look into the Hollywood or West Hollywood area. Both centrally located and have a vibrant nightlife
To suggest you a hotel that would fit your needs we would need to know your budget really

What areas of our city will you be exploring? L.A. is extremely spread out. Our popular tourist destinations are as much as an hour apart from one another.
I%26#39;m not sure what you mean by ';another close, urban area';. How close is ';close';? Beverly Hills is literally surrounded by the city of L.A. Is that too close? Why would you want to spend time driving from a neighboring city into and out of L.A. which is, itself, extremely spread out?
Lastly, doesn%26#39;t everyone want a ';nice place to come back to?'; Please be a little more specific about the type of hotel you%26#39;re looking for: 5-star? 3-star? well-maintained motel?
Expensive:
W Hotel in Westwood, or the new Palomar (might get a special grand opening rate here). Westwood is a great area for families, lots of casual dining, great neighborhood near UCLA, might see a movie premiere up the street. The Getty is nearby as is Beverly Hills.
Moderate:
Hotel Angeleno in Westwood, or Sunset Plaza Hotel in West Hollywood. The Angeleno is fun, and very unique, but isolated without much nearby (at least not walking distance). Rates are sometimes very good if you don%26#39;t mind driving a mile to dining etc.
Sunset Plaza is on the sunset strip, lots of trendy nonsense around as well as comedy clubs, House of Blues, good dining etc.
Less Pricey: Hilgard House in Westwood (no pool, and parking can be tight if you have a van).
You DO NOT want to be in downtown LA, and Hollywood is pretty boring after the first day, if you have a car there%26#39;s no reason really to stay in Hollywood.
I agree with the earlier posts.... don%26#39;t stay downtown if you are a tourist. You should stay on the Westside somewhere (Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica.)
Even though I live here, recently a couple friends and I got a room at the new London Hotel just off the Sunset Strip that was very chic and not terribly expensive. I think it was $200 a night, but that may have been an introductory offer. The pool area on the roof is beautiful and affords amazing views of the city %26amp; hills.

Have fun!
Downtown LA is not a major tourist destination. You need to do some research on what you will do in LA. This isn%26#39;t NYC. This city is very spread out and public transportation takes a while and involves connections. You won%26#39;t be walking between neighborhoods - you%26#39;ll be driving or taking the bus. So, first you need to decide which neighborhoods you will visit and whether you%26#39;ll be renting a car. Then you can find a hotel that%26#39;s convenient for your needs and in your price range (we need a dollar amount for recommendations). Read a guidebook and the FAQs here to help you figure things out.
