Hello,
I was wondering what had happened to this place? As a child, I used to come here with my father for the video games and the strawberry waffles. On my most recent trip to PG, I noticed that my childhood play-place was no longer the same. I%26#39;ve been out of the Peninsula a looooon time.
Thanks!

Hi. I miss it, too. I didn%26#39;t grow up here, but when my daughter was little, we used to go to the carousel all the time. First, the carousel disappeared, and then the games and the restaurant. Just recently, an IMAX theater opened on that site. I enjoy IMAX films, but it%26#39;s just not the same without the carousel.

Omigosh-the carousel! HOW could I have possibly forgotten THAT???!!!??? I bow my head in shame. Sheesh. So, when did this begin to happen? Are none of the shops there anymore? How about the photo studio where you could do the antique shots? I guess it was a magical place for fathers and daughters, eh? I always rode the same horse and my father would stand off to the side taking my picture each time I ';rode'; by.
It%26#39;s been gone for some time and sat empty, probably while the IMAX people were trying to get approval. The photo place is gone. I have a sepia photo of my daughter and her friend (around 9 years old) dressed in turn-of-the-century-style dresses. No more red licorice or cotton candy. All the old-fashioned things are gone. The last holdout of that era in PG closed down about 10 years ago: Sprouse-Reitz department store on Lighthouse Avenue. That%26#39;s where we could always go for a coloring book or some sewing notions or a bucket and shovel for the beach. Did you live in PG as a child?
Hi PG. Yes, I used to live in the ';Old Village'; (ie 17 Mile Dr Village), then later in the new one (though only for a short while). My father later had a house in 17 Mile Dr, closer towards Lighthouse School. Yes, I went there too, all the way until the end. Sprouse-Reitz, there%26#39;s a name I haven%26#39;t heard in AGES. Holman%26#39;s looks nothing the same as it did before. As regard the sepia photos, I%26#39;ve got some of my grandparents, my mother, and I. I vaguely remember the cotton candy-it was more the waffles for me. But, I was definitely a regular in the video arcade. Ahhh, such memories.
Is the Camera Exchange still there? I know that one of the former owners (I think there were three? Or, they were partners?) died back in 1994, but keep forgetting about the present, or as of the past decade at least, existent or lack thereof.
We have Green%26#39;s Camera World on Forest Ave. near Lighthouse. Is that where Camera Exchange was? Lighthouse School now houses the Adult School.
Are you talking about the Carosel that was at cannery row? I had to go within the past 3 years correct?
Yes, roadwork--it%26#39;s the carousel that was in the building between the bike trail and Wave St. I%26#39;ve lost track of how long it%26#39;s been gone, but it%26#39;s been years now. They dismantled the carousel and sent it somewhere else (not sure where), and after that the Edgewater Packing Co. remained open for while, but then closed. It sat empty for quite some time. As I said, I would guess that the IMAX people were working on getting permits.
OK, you got me curious. I found this on the web, from 2002. Only in Vegas:
Cannery Row Carousel Sold
Publication: Amusement Business
Date: Monday, June 24 2002
The carousel that ran indoors at the Edgewater Packing Co. on Steinbeck%26#39;s Famous Cannery Row in Monterey, Calif., was sold on May 19 at auction by Norton Auctioneers. Eventually, it was sold intact for $161,150 to a private individual who is installing it in a custom built room in his home in Las Vegas. It was built by the Herschell-Spillman Merry-Go-Round Co. of Tonawanda, N.Y., in 1915. The 34 horses, two zebras, two chariots and frame were first sold individually for prices ranging from $2,500.
I was just on honeymoon in PG, and took my new husband to see the carousel, (I%26#39;d lived in Del Rey Oaks when I was wee) and it%26#39;s gone, the building is filled with this big blank souless looking IMAX, what were they thinking!! Apart from that everything else was wonderful and PG was def our highlight of the holiday. Oh i did notice the vintage photographer was still there though but in a different building, I can%26#39;t remember the name of it but it was on the opposite side of the cycle track.
Hi McPixie. Thanks for coming to our beautiful Monterey Peninsula for your honeymoon! ;D
You%26#39;ve given me hope as regards the vintage photo place. It%26#39;s probably not the same as it used to be, but at least it%26#39;s a connection. HOpefully, you%26#39;ve remembered something else by now about its ';new'; location? I suppose I%26#39;ll just have to find out via the internet or a personal visit-I%26#39;m just excited to read that it still exists! Sounds like you a brilliant time! ;D
