Driving Los Angeles - Las Vegas

Hi All

Having read some of the previous posts thinking of driving from los angeles to Las Vegas, can anyone recommend a car hire co that will do a one way rental with pick up at LV airport without charging a big 1 way rental charge?

Thanks

Bob

Hi Bob,

Check this website of avis rent a car: www.avis.com

I had never problems hiring a car with avis in the USA returning it at another location (codes to be used is LAX and LAS) and never paid 1 way rental charges with them.

You can do a side-by-side comparison of the major car companies%26#39; rates on Travelocity.com as follows:

1. Go to Travelocity.com

2. Click on the ';CARS'; tab -- located along the top edge of the pink area in the upper left corner of their home page.

3. After clicking on the ';CARS%26#39; tab, click on ONE WAY in the lower right corner of the pink area.

4. Put in LAS in the AIRPORT box under item #1.

5. Under item #2, click on ';At a different location';

6. Put in LAX in the AIRPORT box under item #2.

7.Complete item #3 through #6.

8. Click SEARCH NOW

Today, when I tried it, the 1-day prices for an economy car ranged from #33 ffrom Thrifty (thrifty.com) to $92 from Hertz (hertz.com). Remember: these prices do not include insurance (which is required of non-U.S. citizens unless you have some other means of covering the insurance). The insurance options are usually listed on the detail pages, just before you finish making the reservation.

Good luck!

You can fly a lot faster and sometimes a lot cheaper. The local cheap carriers can have flight sales as low as $49 USD. What airport you can fly out of depends on where exactly in Los Angeles you will be.

Try these companies%26#39; websites for some possible alternatives and get there in much less time for much less money and no traffic:

www.jetblue.com

www.southwest.com

www.americawest.com

www.usairways.com (same company as America West.)

You can fly from LAX, Burbank, Ontario, Long Beach. What airport is closest to you or worth you getting to for a cheap flight depends on where exactly in LA you will be. LA metro area is absolutely huge, with Long Beach to the south, Ontario to the east, Burbank to the north and LAX smack in the middle.

Only one airport in LV, McCarran so they will all fly to the same place.

Good luck! LL

I agree that renting a car doesn%26#39;t make a lot of sense unless you%26#39;re making stops on the way. it%26#39;s not an exciting drive, and you can hit a lot of traffic making it a lot longer than 4-5 hrs. Plus, you don%26#39;t need a car in Vegas. Southwest and Virgin America both fly there for $40-50 one way.

Be careful if you hire a car off a American website.Americans normally only hire the car and use their own car insurance on the hire car you can%26#39;t do this and have to take the package with all the relevant taxes and car insurances.UK sites sell all you need normally called Silver and Gold, the Gold includes a tank of petrol and more drivers if that is what you need.

The drive might not be interesting to locals, but if you come from europe, it is truely stunning drive to say the least. I drove dozens of times from L.A.to Vegas and still love the scenery along the way. There is nothing like it in europe, so you would miss out a lot if you choose to fly

Alex is, of course, 100% correct.

It is a fantastic drive, and an unforgettable experience. Be sure to stop at the Mad Greek in Baker (home to the world%26#39;s largest thermometer) and get a fresh strawberry shake (or a whole mean if you%26#39;re hungry).

I recommend Avis. They don%26#39;t charge extra for a one way rental and have excellent service. The drive isn%26#39;t that bad either. If it is just you, flying is cheap, but if there are several of you, the price off a ticket adds up. It is nice having a car in Las Vegas sometimes also.

Thank you all for your advice. I have had a number of people in England who have driven between LA %26amp; Vegas tell me it is a must to drive. So, drive we will. Now for the difficult bit: 4WD (RV I think for our american friends) or big saloon? There are only 2 of us travelling so opinions please. Also re insurance, can anyone give me a clue as to how much to allow for additional insurances so i dont hit the credit card with a $1500 liability?

As always many thanks to all

Bob

Could all the people who repeatedly suggest to European visitors that the fly, rather than drive, LA--%26gt;LV please save this an memorize it:
