Need to get from San Jose to San Francisco, easily...

Hello,

I will be in San Jose for a seminar and afterwards would like to go to San Francisco. Is there an easy way to do this? Or should I forget it and just go home? Any help would be appreciated. I will be staying near the SJ airport and want to stay downtown in SF. Thanks

depends on when you are leaving. if it is after work you will hit traffic. Normally the quickest route is the 101 freeway. Now during rush hour on weekdays I have found that taking 280 up until you hit 380 and cross over to the 101N just past the airport. this will save you 25 minutes in traffic. If you are going on a weekend then you won%26#39;t have to many problems. You can always take BART, but if you don%26#39;t have much time it isn%26#39;t worth it. normal drive via the 280/380/101 route is one hour.

BART doesn%26#39;t go to San Jose, but you could take Caltrain.

If you want to take the train, the Santa Clara station is the closest to the SJ airport. www.caltrain.com for schedules and further info. This will get you into SF and 4th and Townsend Sts. Cabs are available from there and probably the best way to downtown with luggage. However, the #30 Stockton bus is available and it will get you to Union Square (or a block from it actually).

Either the train or the drive isn%26#39;t a long trip and worth it to stay in the city for a couple of days!

ALternatively, take CalTrain to the Millbrae station and xfer over to BART which takes you to Union Square.

To me, the easiest route without a car or cab is to indeed take CalTrain, but upon reaching the end of the line in San Francisco, I%26#39;d get out and cross the street to catch a Muni streetcar (N or T line).

The streetcar will go along the Embarcadero and into the subway system. You%26#39;ll most likely want to get off at Powell Street (Union Square), depending on your hotel. Powell is just six stops from the train station.

CalTrain should cost you $7.50 and Muni will cost you $1.50.

I meant to add - the longer way around via public transit is to take a cab or other transportation to the Fremont BART station (this is North of San Jose). You could then take BART directly to Powell Station for $5.25 - but it%26#39;s a long trip.

CalTrain to Millbrea: $5.75 and BART to US: $4.

Thank you everyone. I%26#39;ll weigh all the options and see which is better. I really appreciate your responses.

Taking Caltrain directly to 4th %26amp; King and then catching Muni (N, T, 30, or 45--don%26#39;t forget the 45, it does the same thing as the 30!) is the quickest* of the 3 options presented. It%26#39;s also the cheapest. If you can catch the Baby Bullet train, then that%26#39;s even better!

Switching to BART at the Millbrae station is not too much slower overall, just by a few minutes, but is definitely more expensive. Catching a bus to Fremont and then take BART from there is much slower, and again, more expensive.

*Technically, using the 30 or 45 is quickest. Using the N or T actually results in a trip time equivalent to using BART from Millbrae.

P.S. I apologize for the nerdiness of this post. I%26#39;ve had far to long to think about and research this in the past...
