Traffic ? from any former NYC People out there....

Question for anyone who may have lived in the NYC area recently: how does SD traffic during rush hour compare to NYC? I hear/read many stories about traffic during the rush hours, but I wondered how it would compare to the NYC commute.

I%26#39;m going to be out there from 10/4-11 with a rental car and want to know how much extra time to leave in making plans to go places.

Thanks!

Where will you be staying, going, and at what time?

No specific plans - of course, the usual stops like the zoo, Balboa Park, La Jolla, a bunch of museums, Coronado, etc. - whatever we feel like doing when we get up in the morning! Mainly sightseeing just because we%26#39;ve never been to California. We%26#39;re staying on Shelter Island.

I%26#39;m just curious because I see comments on all of these boards about freeways and traffic, and I keep thinking ';It can%26#39;t be as bad as NYC commuting traffic!';

Our resident New York/San Diego expert just left for Italy - but she has ALWAYS indicated that the traffic is not nearly as bad as New York/New Jersey

Here are a couple of threads where it has been addressed

I know it has come up before - if you put ';Traffic New Jersey'; in the San Diego search box you%26#39;ll see some others

NYC is worse. You have more of that surface street I could walk faster than this congestion where we get slowing and bottlenecks on the freeways mostly during rush hour. I think more people are probably surprised by the cars zipping by on the multi lane freeways rather than the jams. Some say hit the road after 9AM or wait it out until after 7PM. I don%26#39;t think there is any need for either. maybe if you%26#39;re driving SD to LA, but otherwise no big deal unless you must be somewhere at a certain time like the airport, a concert in S. bay, or if your traffic phobic. Wait til you get here, decide where you%26#39;re going and ask at your hotel if any concerns. No worries Jersey Boy I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ve seen the worst!

I would say to not travel to Coronado in the morning or leave Coronado in the afternoon on Monday through Friday because of the heavy military traffic. Considering the other areas you mentioned, not really a problem concerning the traffic.

Word of caution: Many New Yorkers visit鈥any don鈥檛 return or relocate at a later date.

Thanks for all of the info! I%26#39;m actually looking forward to seeing how the West Coast lives!!

San Diego metro is only 3 million people. NY metro is 21 million so SD is much smaller. We have the usual rush hour traffic for 2 hours in the am and 2 hours in the pm but it usually moves pretty quickly.

a tiny tip

rush hour is rush hour

doesn%26#39;t matter much where you travel.

ask for specific bottle necks in places a tourist might get stuck.

example...If you need to get out of La Jolla in the late afternoon.

We drove around San Diego for a week in August and did not shy away from rush hour traffic...hey it happens...but if you are a big planner...you could avoid some snarls with the right info.

Stay off 805 South from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. It%26#39;s bumber to bumper. Other than that i have been able to get anywhere at any time without too much hassle. Nothing like Route 80 East from PA to NJ in the morning!

Hey GratefulDeb where%26#39;ve you been? Weren%26#39;t you thinking of moving here? Did you?
