Need opinions on Patrick's Point Campground please

Hi all, we are planning a wonderful trip from San Diego all the way to Victoria, Canada this summer. We are mostly tent camping and herein lies my question. We will be camping in Patrick%26#39;s Point Campground for 2 nights and have been thrilled with the information we%26#39;ve read about it. I%26#39;d like to hear any first hand comments from anyone who has camped here... Any not to be missed sights, trails, food, etc? Also, are insects a problem at this campground? Thanks in advance for any help!

It is a great campground. I have not camped there myself, but have been there many times. My sister is a volunteer at the toll/information booth. She lives in Trinidad.nearby.

The campground is beautiful and spacious and under trees, and from there you can walk down stairs from the bluff to a lovely beach. No insects, but be sure to have warm clothing. If you are from warm country be aware that the northern California coast is never hot and sometimes not even warm, and sometimes downright cold, even in the summer.

No insects. For not to be missed sights and trails, ask the volunteer at the information booth. For food, if you want to eat out you may have to go back to Trinidad. There is a restaurant at Trinidad Head....just go to that tiny town and keep going down hill.

I think you are going to really enjoy Patricks Point. Just be sure you are warm %26lt;grin%26gt;.

Puter, thanks so much for the info, and more importantly, the no insects report! We don%26#39;t mind cold weather, but the bugs we can do without! Thanks again :-)

Patrick%26#39;s Point is one of the greatest campgrounds I have ever been to. Just got back from camping there over the July 4th 2007 weekend.

Make sure you have a confirmed reservation as it is usually booked up during the summer season. There is not a lot of privacy in the campground area but there is plenty of space to hike to serene areas.

A don%26#39;t miss area is about 10 miles north just passed Orick where you will see the Roosevelt Elk. The trail down to the ocean at PP is steep. If you want easy acess to the beach, go north to Big Lagoon and walk south along the beach.

If you eat or shop in Trinidad it%26#39;s likely to be expensive. I%26#39;d stop in one of the whole food supermarkets in Arcata and get some groceries. Orick has a very good diner and a decent mexican restaurant which are much cheaper than most of the Trinidad restaurants.

I camped there as a kid many years ago and have briefly visited since. Generally that area of California does not have an insect problem, due to the cool weather and the redwoods (which tend to be resistant to insects). It%26#39;s a unique place that I think you%26#39;ll like. Trinidad is an attractive town with a market and restaurants, some of which are very good.

We went on a 8,800 mile, 33-day camping trip with a popup in 2005 and stayed in Patrick%26#39;s Point for 3 days. It was my daughter%26#39;s (age 11) FAVorite of all of the places we went. Gorgeous, quiet, peaceful - even in August. Do be prepared for cold, not just cold, but misty cold - make sure you have a way to dry out and get warm or you%26#39;ll be miserable. But, we%26#39;re just now looking at another trip and Patrick%26#39;s Point is on the top of our list. We found the campsites to be very roomy, but maybe it was because our popup isn%26#39;t all that big.

I camped at Patrick%26#39;s Point about 45 years ago, and I can still see it in my mind. We drove through it last August, and it has changed, but it is still stunning.

I have a couple of suggestions for the area, if you have the time.

Ferndale is a very charming town just southwest of Fortuna. It is mainly built of Victorian architecture, and if I remember correctly, still has wooden sidewalks. You would probably have to backtrack to get there. so you may not want to go the extra mileage.

The other place is somewhat a local landmark. The %26#39;Samoa Cookhouse%26#39; is a huge Family Style eatery that serves lunch and dinner. It was originally for the hungry lumberjacks, and they do serve a lot of food. The main entree in always Fried Chicken, and cornbread with honey butter, and several side dishes accopmny theese. The food is wonderful, and the place is always packed, but I don%26#39;t think you need reservations. It%26#39;s been a long time since I%26#39;ve been there, but my brother ate there about a couple of years ago. the Cookhouseentréeaccompanythese is above Fernwood, and not far off 101, but you do need to take a little detour out of Eureka.

I%26#39;m sure you can pick up brochures anywhere around Fortuna.

It sounds like you have a wonderful trip planned out, hope you have a great time!!

I%26#39;m sorry for the messy post, I just installed a new spellcheck, and it made a mess of my post. I didn%26#39;t check it for errors, and should have. Sorry.

Hope you can read it.

Nelliebell, are you planning on camping along the Oregon coast? If you have not yet made reservations, you should *right away*. The State Parks are very busy and book up far in advance.

There are some private and county/city parks which do allow tent camping, such as Brookings Beachfront RV park - right on the beach.

I, too, am planning a camping trip to Patrick%26#39;s Point . It looks like a wonderful campground, however, I am dismayed to find that dogs are not allowed on trails or the beach. I have 2 small dogs and would like to hear of any dog friendly beaches in the Trinidad area. Thanks!!
