The more specific you can be the better advice you%26#39;ll get!

When are you coming?

What%26#39;s your definition of ';not too expensive?';

What do you like in a hotel?

Do you want to be right in the thick of things or in a quieter area?

The TA reviews are a good place to start. Also the ';Things to Do'; section accessible from the left side of the screen.

What kind of food are you looking for?

What do you want to see?

What are your interests?

In general, SF is very safe as cities go. The one part of town to stay away from that is close to where travelers might go is the Tenderloin, at least at night.

Yes, it always helps to specifically state your hotel budget -- ';reasonable'; has a huge range, lol.

If you are on a very tight budget, consider hostels. There are three in San Francisco. They have private rooms and private bathrooms, and cost $60 to $85 USD per night. (Dorm rooms are much cheaper, about $30 USD per night) Free continental breakfast and other amenities are included.

http://www.norcalhostels.org/

Here%26#39;s what I suggest regarding finding a hotel, I%26#39;ve done it many times with great success:

1) Log into one of the many travel/hotel sites - give it your days, number of people, etc it will give you available hotels. Then sort based on price (or maybe use the map location option) and get to your price range.

2) Then, after determining a few you consider possibles based on your price point, availability etc. - check out the reviews on tripadvisor.

3) If nothing ';fits,'; then change your criteria and start over. Unfortunately, you may find everything in your price range is booked and . . . .

This system does require the usual ';read TA reviews skills'; particularly when looking in the lower budget range, but still works amazingly well.

To elaborate ';read TA reviews skills'; a few points:

1) Be skeptical of an occasional ';worst hotel I%26#39;ve ever stayed at'; - often these are written by people who have a beef/chip on their shoulder (which may or may not be legit, but nonetheless). I can%26#39;t count the number of times I have stayed at hotels that had at least one review like this and been at least happy (if not very happy) with the hotel. (I swear some of these people need to stay in REALLY bad hotels just to get things in perspective.)

2) Similarly be skeptical of the ';not as bad as everyone says'; review; if you%26#39;ve got 19 out of 20 reviews saying it%26#39;s a dump, it probably is.

3) Obviously weigh recent reviews higher than old reviews.

4) Be aware of/about %26amp; take with a grain of salt complaints that will apply to just about any hotel in the area (such as SF hotels in big cities, like SF, charging an arm %26amp; a leg for parking). Yeah, it may tick you off that the hotel charged you $$$/night for parking, but that%26#39;s just the way it is any similar hotel has a similar charge.

5) Remember when someone did priceline/hotwire and then complains - it may just be that they got what they paid for (i.e. not being able to pick the hotel, only certain of bed space for 2, etc.)

6) When in doubt, search the forum and/or ask questions about a specific hotel or two.

Hope this is helpful,

Thanks very much for your advice! I am sorry for not being more specific but you have already given me some more ideas and i will follow it up....thanks, I am looking forward to visiting San Fran. :)

That is a great sensible response by huntlawoffice.

Do some research, come back with specific questions on areas, hotels, restaurants etc.

looking forward to helping you once we know more.

Great outline by huntlawoffice. You should post that in a traveler article so it doesn%26#39;t get lost!

The only caveat I would add to huntlawoffice%26#39;s good advice is to also be wary of reviews that state a property is ';incredibly wonderful, best stay we%26#39;ve ever had, the desk clerk Suzy was outstanding'; and so on -- generally just overly gushing with praise.

TA has been experiencing a rash of fake reviews recently.

The only way at the present time to distinguish between a possible fake and a real review is to laboriously click on each reviewer%26#39;s name, then check to see how many contributions they have made, both forum and reviews.

When someone joined a reasonable period of time ago and has done *only* one review, nothing else, suspect the validity of that review.

The restaurant reviews are quickly becoming corrupted, as TA is allowing anonymous ';TA contributors'; from other websites to post reviews. There is no way to look up and check the posting history of these people. It is a problem.

Oh, and bel24, when checking reviews, also click on the other tabs for ';B%26amp;Bs / Inns'; and ';Specialty Lodging';. Hostels are under the specialty lodging category.
