which is recommended?

A toss up. I think the Westin San Diego (Emerald Plaza) is nicer, but the Westin Gaslamp is a slightly better location (they are about three blocks apart) and the gaslamp one is part of a shopping mall.

The Westin San Diego is in a cleaner, fresher, and sunnier location with a better pool deck.
If you stay at the Westin SD they have two types of standard rooms some are 350 sq. ft. and some are 425 sq. ft. there is no price difference between the two rooms.
We stayed at the Westin San Diego last week. The hotel was everything you would expect of a Westin, Location is great, pool deck is nice but it was very busy over the weekend as its not the biggest pool area you will ever see. We have never stayed at the Westin Gas lamp so cannot really comment on it aside from the fact its attached to Horton plaza (as previously mentioned). We were very happy with the Westin San Diego and would happily recommend it.
