Hello,

We are travelling to San Fran on 18th September 2008 for four days and will need to hire a car as we are embarking on a road trip up to Washington and back over three weeks. Can anyone recommend the best car hire company either at airport or in the city?

I visited California this summer, starting in San Francisco and rented a car with Hertz (in advance in my own country to be able to ask for all details really included). I ckecked cheaper car rentals but I didn%26#39;t trust them since I had to drive 4,000 miles through California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.

My Californian friends recommended picking up the car in the city center (it%26#39;s cheaper than at the airport) on my last day in San Francisco since you don%26#39;t really need it there if you are staying in the city center, it%26#39;s worth walking and using public transport in SF.

I got a very good price with Hertz (433 Mason St) for 16 days, medium-size car for 2 with big suitcases, full insurance and travelost system (GPS). We picked it up in Market Street and took it back at the airport.

When you%26#39;re in SF, will you need a car?

The reason I ask is that I%26#39;ve a trip planned for Nov/Dec, which is similar to yours. (5 days in SF, then a road trip)

Apart from the cost of the hire car, there is also the parking, and some hotels charge quite a lot for this. The one I%26#39;m booked into wanted $35 + tax a day).

I%26#39;m now flying into SFO and getting a taxi to the city (approx $45-$50 with tip), spending my time there, then picking the hire car up from the Alamo union square depot on the day I%26#39;m leaving.

When I%26#39;m due to fly out of SF, I%26#39;m dropping the car off at the airport (no extra charge for doing this).

sorry Castelldefels, I%26#39;ve only just seen your post. You had already suggested just about everything I said!

Do reserve the car in England, before you leave. You will then have the insurance included and all of the details taken care of.

And you want to pick it up in downtown San Francisco just before you leave on your trip north, as indicated.

There are several car rental sites in the Union Square area.
