The Golden Gateway Holiday Inn Hotel, near The Tenderloin???

Hi, I%26#39;m going to San Francisco next week and we have booked a hotel as above.

I%26#39;ve read a few posts on here about the Tenderloin area, I just wanted to know is my hotel nearby?

Many Thanks

The Golden Gateway Holiday Inn Hotel, near The Tenderloin???

Well, yes it is not too far from the Tenderloin; however, it is worth noting that pretty much anything east of twin peaks isn%26#39;t too far from the Tenderloin or some other questionable area (okay, that%26#39;s going a bit far, but you get the idea). The city just isn%26#39;t that big.

More too the point it%26#39;s no closer to the Tenderloin than much of what is thought of as Union Square; particularly Union Square ';West'; (which I%26#39;ve often thought of as the tourist industry%26#39;s name for Tenderloin ';East';).

I%26#39;ve stayed at this hotel a couple of times and it%26#39;s in a safe area of town. About the only thing I%26#39;d say not to do is to walk East/Southeast from the hotel late at night (or approach it from that direction) - that could take you into the heart of the Tenderloin.

Also, a benefit of staying there is that the California Cable Car line is actually useful to you. Get a MUNI pass (to save $$$ and headaches) and then walk the block or two north and you can actually use a cable car on a regular basis without having to wait hours. Also, you%26#39;re on Van Ness which is a major bus route street.

Bottom Line: I wouldn%26#39;t be worried at this hotel based on it%26#39;s location, at least not anymore than I would at some of those classified as ';Union Square.';

Excellent, thank you for your quick response!

Danger from the Tenderloin is vastly over blown. You Will be fine.

There are three interesting, fun restaurants within walking distance of your hotel. The House of Prime Rib, Tommy%26#39;s Joynt, and Mel%26#39;s Diner. That is a very convenient hotel and it has a nice pool and sun deck/bar/recreation area.

L0uL0u23, I live near there. The Holiday Inn Golden Gateway is not in or a part of or near the Tenderloin. It is directly between Pacific Heights and Nob Hill, an area known as Polk Village and Polk Gulch.

see this Go List for tips of what to do in the neighborhood:

The hotel is nice, people who work there are friendly, the pool is nice and not in the windy part of the hotel.

The hotel is some distance from the heart of the Tenderloin. It%26#39;s safe enough, but not the most spectacular location regardless. You can get public transit to every part of the City, but it is a medium to long walk to Union Square, Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf, Chinatown, North Beach, and many other tourist attractions. It%26#39;s a bus ride to Haight Ashbury, Golden Gate Park and other outlying areas.

If you stay on a higher floor, you can get a great view. Another plus is that the California Street cable car stop is right next to the hotel. Polk Street is a block away and has a variety of restaurants and specialty businsses. Also not far away is Japantown, with restaurants, shops, and cultural offerings

I%26#39;d put this in the category of a good business traveler hotel rather than an exciting tourist destination, but overall, the location and surroundings will be fine.

That hotel is MUCH closer to The Tenderloin than it is to the Golden Gateway. Why it bears that name is a bafflling boggle.

Thanks guys all your posts are great, and have out me at ease.

Now I%26#39;ve just got to sort our room out. Another friend (third person) is joining us so i have to see if the hotel will let her stay in our room...fingers crossed!

I%26#39;m back and you guys were right, not too close to that area, but I can understand how some people might wander into it by mistake!

I love San Francisco!

For informational purposes, was the hotel accommodating regarding your situation/room request? I%26#39;m sure those that post on the forum regularly and/or visitors would like to know.
