Where to stay for 49ers game

Coming to SF with my 17 year old son to see a 49ers game in September. Debating whether to stay at Union Square, or near the wharf - I%26#39;d like to show my son the city so he can get a feel for it. Wondering if either place offers convenient public transport to the stadium, like BART or other?

Also...We%26#39;d like a hotel in the range of a Hyatt, Westin or nice boutique style place like Klimpton or similar

Then stay at Union Square. plenty of hotel choices, better than those at the Wharf. Easier transportation to the game as well. You might take the T line to the game. It connects with a bus shuttle, or chose a bus. You are closer to the park at Union Square.

And if staying in Union Square you%26#39;ll take the 9X route. Don%26#39;t take the T (ok, I never took it, but unless it%26#39;s an express service, I%26#39;d stay away as 3rd street goes right through the %26#39;rough%26#39; neighborhoods). 9X picks up at Sutter %26amp; Kearny or Stockton %26amp; Geary or Stockton %26amp; Ellis - easy walk from Union Square and hops on the freeway and drops you off right at the park. Rides home are a bit crowded but hey, it%26#39;s still better than lines of cars leaving the park.

We are staying in Pacific Heights and also hoping to attend a game in September. I haven%26#39;t, as yet, done much research on transportation around SF as we love walking but realise we need it for this sort of event. Is bus the only way to get there - is there a train service or is a combo of the two? Also how long does it take to get there?

You%26#39;ll take the 47X most likely (which runs down Van Ness). Where are you staying (intersection)? From most of Pac Heights, the walk to Van Ness isn%26#39;t that bad.

Thanks, checked the link (again) and scrolled down this time (doh!) more info and a little clearer now. Doesn%26#39;t seem like a long journey either which is a bonus!

We are staying at the Drisco hotel on Pacific Ave believe the intersection is Broderick St?

cool. you%26#39;ll have a bit of a walk, it%26#39;s not bad, but it%26#39;ll take at least 20 minutes. The bus picks up at Van Ness and California. You can also walk down to Broderick and California and hop on the 1 Line. Which then will drop off at Clay and Van Ness - and you%26#39;ll need to walk 2 blocks back to California. Also, your transfer from the 1 line will not work on the 47X. It%26#39;s a separate fare. Alright, hope that clears it up. It%26#39;s not too bad!

Let me just say that the 9x bus from Union Square to the game was really convenient- I would definitely use it again. On teh way back it wasn%26#39;t quite as nice, as there was a Giants game that let out same time as 49ers so traffic was a mess... but overall, it was still much better than driving.

I%26#39;d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Muni changed the 49ers Express route numbers this year so they won%26#39;t be confused with the regular bus routes. Thus, the 9X is now known as the 79X, the 47X is now the 77X, etc. This is especially important for the 79X users to know, as there is an actual 9X that does NOT serve Candlestick Park.

However, anyone that goofs up and takes the regular 9X should take comfort in the fact that one can still get to Candlestick. Simply get off the bus at San Bruno/Bacon and catch the 86 bus shuttle.

Those people wishing to go on an adventure should consider taking the T-Third rail line to the Gilman stop, then switch to the 87 bus shuttle. Do keep in mind that the T is slow, moderately unreliable, and crosses through a less-than-desirable neighborhood, so use with caution.
