how long do we need here?

Wanting to visit San Francisco. We would like to see just all the typical touristy things. - golden gate bridge, alcatraz, hire a go-car, and also Yosemite Park seems to be appealing too (would you suggest to visit this park?)

How long does it sound like we need to stay in San Francisco for?

I must add that we will probably be in a bit of a rush the whole time, because we have other cities we want to visit, and Cuba or Bahamas too.

You%26#39;d want to give SF 3 days to hit all the main spots. 2 days will work in a pinch, but you%26#39;ll miss some things. Give yourself 4 days if you find the leisure time.

Yosemite is wonderful, and you should certainly make the trip there if you can. However, you will need to dedicate 4-5 hours driving each way, plus much of a day looking around (or at least 1 full day if you sightsee *and* hike). Overall, you%26#39;d need to give yourself an extra day and a half to get here and back and still see something in the process.

A good way to conserve time is to rent a car in the morning, spend half a day taking the 49-mile scenic drive around town, then head out to Yosemite. Spend the night in the park, get up early the next morning, and sightsee and hike throughout the day. Return to SF in the later afternoon or early evening.

If you can%26#39;t find time to visit SF *and* Yosemite, I suggest visiting SF and then traveling south along the coast to Santa Cruz and/or Monterey for a day, or traveling across the Golden Gate Bridge to explore West Marin (Muir Woods, Marin Headlands, etc.) for half a day.

Alternatively, you could set aside a few hours to hike in the hills of Berkeley or Oakland. You could catch BART or the bus (or drive) across the Bay to take an urban hike around many of the interesting footpaths and stairways, many of which have impressive views of the San Francisco Bay.
