We have a trip planned down Hwy 1 that will take us from Arcata to LA 7/24-8/5, with stops in Sonoma, SF, Big Sur, and SLOP planned along the way. Is there reason to suspect that we%26#39;ll need to start looking at alternative plans at this time due to the wildfires?
Wildfires
There are a number of alternative routes that run somewhat parallel to Highway 1, most notably Highway 101 and Interstate 5. You should be fine.
Wildfires
NASA has satellite photos of the fires/smokes in California, updated every other day or so here:

See what%26#39;s getting burned and smoked out. There are some road closures, especially Hwy 1, to look into as well.
If you were planning to travel south through Big Sur on Highway 1, you might start thinking about a plan B. That highway is currently closed and might still be closed for several weeks.
Thanks for the info . . . So, would all of you area experts recommend that we simply cx our exisiting reservation in Big Sur, and plan on heading to SLOP via Hwy101 at this point? Stinks to miss out on Big Sur (never been), but it will give us a reason to come back . . .
You should phone to check your reservations anyway.
There have been some evacuations so if nobody answers the phone, you%26#39;ll know why.
