You can check on Craigslist.org, just watch out for scams since you are out-of-town.

Santa Barbara has a reputation for being extremely expensive. They are worried about the city, because policemen, firemen and nurses cannot afford to live there (for the most part) because their salaries do not match the cost of living. So, they all live 20 miles away. But what happens in an earthquake or flood? The town will be in trouble, with all their first-responders living miles away. And if the ONE FREEWAY into Santa Barbara is blocked.....a nightmare waiting to happen.

Hi wanderlust,

First question, what do you consider reasonable? Second question, would you mind living in Goleta and commuting about 15 minutes to SB?

When I first moved to town 8 years ago, I was able to find an apartment through a complany called Bartlein %26amp; Co, located on upper State Street. This company manages a lot of apartment complexes throughout Santa Barbara and Goleta. They publish a list everyday of the available apartment and will give you keys if you want to go look at the places. I recommend them for the ease of the process.

There are some high-end property management companies as well that deal in house and condo rentals (like Sierra Property Management) but I think you are looking more for a apartment.

Here are the choices for a 2 bedroom apartment in a decent not a great areas for each community.

Montecito - $2,000 - 3,000

Santa Barbara outside - $1,500 -1,800

Santa Barbara downtown - 2,000 - 2,500

Goleta - $1,200-1,800

Carpenteria outside $600-1,200

Carpenteria - beachside $1,700-2,000

So if you are coming from New York City these should be normal rates for you. If you are coming from a smaller urban core you may have to commute from between 15 -45 minutes a day each way like many people do.

With all due respect to the prior poster there are no 2 bedroom apartments in Goleta for $1200. We rent out our old 2 bedroom condo in goleta for $2150.
